A Word of Reassurance (To He I Have Not Met)

As I walk beyond the wall
Or cry myself to sleep,
As I moan my lonesome state,
And shudder lest I weep,
As I press the window sill
Between my fingers white,
And stare upon the wasted moon
Yet shudder from it's sight,
It gives me hope to think that you
Might suffer much the same,
To think that neither you nor I
Have so much as a name.
In my mind a space is blank
Where will reside a face;
I cannot even sketch one there
That time will not erase.
But somewhere you are chasing air
Pursuing naught but dust,
I have not come within your scope
So you may win my trust.
Though we may sit back to back
On each side of a tree,
We'd know it not 'til night had passed
And allowed us both to see.
For now the bark is rough and thick
And roots spread all around,
Shadows swirl and catch my eyes
As leaves fall to the ground.
Someday there will come the day
When I peer 'round the tree,
And find your sparkling, laughing eyes
Gazing back at me,
But until then I must content
Myself with wish and dream
And know that you are crying too
For the ending of this scream.
You must take heart, for I am here,
Though you don't know me yet,
And even now I love you,
Though our eyes have never met.
Our mutual Friend will guide us
Until the time is right,
And when the mood is finally set
He will let us see the light.
